How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
The American Dental Association recommends that you get your dental cleaning done at least once every 6 months. However, you might be required to get cleanings more often as certain medications and habits can increase the amount of accumulated plaque. If you have a history of periodontal disease, you should get your teeth cleaned more often in order to prevent the recurrence of infections or disease. You should also have your teeth cleaned more often if you suffer from chronic conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease due to their link to dental problems.
What is Deep Cleaning?
Deep cleaning is also known in the dental world as scaling and root planing. Scaling involves removing plaque and tartar from the surface of the roots at the bone level. This procedure is usually necessary if patients have missed a lot of routine cleanings and require stabilization or as a first step for gum disease treatment. It may be done with an ultrasonic machine and/or by hand with special instruments. The hygienist will measure the bone loss and keep a record to see your improvements every three months.
Deep cleaning will require a minimum of two appointments. Afterwards, you will be required to get regular cleanings every three months until your hygienist confirms that your gums and teeth are healthier and there is no risk of developing gum disease.
What is Arestin?
Arestin is one of the modern medications created to treat localized bone loss. It is a concentrated, locally applied antibiotic that remains active in the pocket for an extended period of time, targeting bacteria to reduce pocket depth to possibly avoid surgical intervention. Our dentists in Henderson & Las Vegas will help you teat bone loss to avoid gum surgery.
What is Gum Disease?
Many adults have gum, or periodontal disease, caused by the bacteria in plaque which irritate the gums, making them swollen, red and more likely to bleed. It eventually will cause bone loss around the tooth and in advanced stages, can cause tooth loss due to the lack of bone support.
One reason gum disease is so widespread among adults is that it is often a painless condition until the advanced stage. The good news is that with regular dental visits, gum disease can be treated or prevented entirely.
What is Gum Recession?
Gum recession is the process when the gum is pushed away from its original position exposing the root of the tooth.
When gum recession occurs, bone loss can be associated with it. It can usually be caused by harsh brushing, grinding or clenching.
